Orthopaedic Services

University Hospital offers a full-range of orthopaedic services, featuring fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeons who specialize in providing state-of-the-art expertise in all aspects of hand, spine, sports medicine, total joint and trauma surgery.

Highly-Skilled Clinicians for Spine Surgery

University Hospital’s Spine Surgery program features one of the country’s most experienced groups of spine surgeons in treating Level I spine injuries. Our spine surgeons treat a complex field of spine fractures and spinal cord injuries, and  are also involved in the region’s only Cincinnati Spine Fellowship program. Our spine surgeons are also involved in the UC Orthopaedic Residency program, which actively trains surgeons.

Our Spine Division is also headed by world-class physicians who have years of extensive surgical experience, including minimally invasive and complex revision surgery. These experts have several areas of focus, including treatment of adult traumatic spine injuries and complex spinal instabilities, including disorders of the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine, degenerative disease and deformity. Some of our division surgeons also specialize in both pediatric and adult spine surgery, with particular expertise in the management of spinal deformity.

What Sets Us Apart? Fellowship-Trained Physicians

The Orthopaedic Trauma Division is set apart by its strong physician leadership. The department is led by orthopaedic traumatologists who completed fellowships in Cincinnati and who are recognized as the regional experts for multiple orthopaeidc injuries and complex orthopaedic trauma.

Our lead orthopaedic traumatologists are nationally recognized for their work in treating a broad spectrum of orthopaedic trauma conditions – including: pelvic and acetabular fractures, bone infection/osteomyelitis surgery, and complex limb reconstruction (a bone lengthening/straightening procedure that involves multiple bone cuts and fixators attached to the bone to slowly correct the deformity).

Additionally, our experts have experience in complex fracture surgery and joint replacement surgery, which enables us to provide the most comprehensive care in the region for post-traumatic arthritis of the knee and hip. The Orthopaedic Trauma Division at University Hospital also provides revision reconstruction surgery for difficult upper extremity fractures that have developed issues or problems.

Sports Medicine Specialists

Our Sports Medicine program is a comprehensive, integrated and multidisciplinary program providing medical, surgical, preventive and rehabilitative services for athletes and active individuals. The program team is directed by orthopaedic physicians who serve as team physicians for the University of Cincinnati, Cincinnati Bengals, Cincinnati State and Technical College, and various local high school teams. Our physicians participate in NIH grants totaling $4.5 million and hold leadership posts on the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) – accredited Sports Medicine Fellowship. They are also pioneers in creating innovative new procedures. Our anesthesia team has been placing scalene catheters on a routine basis for complex shoulder cases. This allows for quicker recovery time and minimizes hospital stay.

One of our division physicians recently performed a relatively new procedure for hip arthroscopy by addressing intraarticular problems without making a large incision and dislocating the hip joint. We were the first program in the area to perform a staged bilateral hip arthroscopic labral repair.
