Training New Nephrologists
One major mission of our program at University Hospital and the University of Cincinnati is to train new nephrologists so we can continue to provide excellent care for patients with kidney disease, locally and nationwide. Our fellowship program is designed to train new nephrologists by providing our fellows with a state-of-the-art experience in all aspects of nephrology, including various kidney diseases, kidney and pancreas transplantation, hypertension and fluid-electrolyte disorders.
End Stage Renal Disease Center/Advanced Kidney Disease Center
Providing High-Quality Care to Patients With Kidney Disease
University Hospital’s End Stage Renal Disease Center provides all forms of treatments for patients with advanced kidney disease including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, continuous hemofiltration and dialysis (CVVH and CVVHD) and surgical placement of vascular access for
hemodialysis and peritoneal catheter for peritoneal dialysis treatment. In addition, apheresis is provided for patients who require plasma exchange for various hematological, neurological and renal diseases.
Our interventional nephrologists use innovative techniques for vascular access procedures, which include declotting grafts; dye studies on grafts, fistulas and catheters; placing tunnel catheters; removing tunnel catheters for dialysis; and placing and removing catheters for peritoneal dialysis. Our inpatient unit provides eight dialysis stations, a separate isolation station and a procedure room with an adjoining recovery area.
Sixteen physicians provide patient care at University Hospital’s End Stage Renal Disease Center as well at its network of outlying dialysis units.
Research Brings New Treatments to Patients
Many of our University Hospital specialists are currently working as University of Cincinnati researchers and educators and have earned international reputations for their work on kidney disease. Our specialists have received grants from research organizations including the National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the American Heart Association and other national organizations to identify the causes of worsening kidney disease. Our goal is to develop new treatments to control the progression of kidney disease and new therapies to sustain dialysis access in patients, eliminating the need for multiple interventions and surgeries. All of our research efforts are focused on significantly improving quality of life for our patients.
