Joint Replacement Center

Full-Service Orthopaedics Center

University Hospital’s Joint Replacement Center is a full-service orthopaedics center with fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeons.  Our orthopaedic specialists provide joint replacement surgery for the knee, hip, shoulder, wrist and small joint replacement of the hand.  We also treat other conditions related to replacing or repairing damaged joints.

Joint Replacement Surgery

University Hospital orthopaedic specialists replace cartilage that has worn away over the years, covering raw, arthritic bone ends with metal and plastic. This surgery can eliminate pain and help you move more easily.  Our team of orthopaedic specialists performs approximately 330 joint replacement surgeries every year.

Theodore Toan Le, M.D., Director, Division of Adult Reconstruction, specializes in total joint replacement and trauma, and serves as a regional specialist for complicated fractures and adult reconstruction.  Dr. Le has extensive experience in joint replacement surgery.

Keith Kenter, M.D., Director, Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program, specializes in sports medicine.  He performs a relatively new procedure for hip arthroscopy by addressing intraarticular problems without making a large incision and dislocating the hip joint.  We were the first program in the area to perform a staged bilateral hip arthroscopic labral repair.

Dr. Kenter is also a participant for two NIH grants project totaling $4.5 million: “A Developmentally-Based Tissue Engineering Approach to Improve Tendon Repair” and “Anterior Curiae Ligament Injury Mechanisms in Female Athletes: Finite Element Investigation.”

Pre-Surgery Education

University Hospital patients may complete a pre-surgery class led by clinic therapists and nurses in an effort to obtain the best possible outcomes with their joint replacement surgery.  Orthopaedic care specialists recommend a program of strength and flexibility training to help patients recover faster following surgery.

Post-Surgery Rehabilitation

Most of our patients remain on our unit throughout the course of their treatment and rehabilitation.  Following discharge, they may be referred to a skilled nursing facility for further rehabilitation.

  • Specializing in Complex Cases

Our orthopaedic care team provides care for the most specialized cases, including:

    • Complex medical cases
    • Previous traumatic injury where the patient has developed a condition affecting the repair, such as post-traumatic arthritis
    • Revisions, as in replacing a previously replaced joint that has diminished function after years of usage.

    Advanced Training

You’re cared for by a team that includes physicians on the orthopaedic teaching staff at the University of Cincinnati Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.  These specialists provide care using the most advanced orthopaedic and physical therapy routines.  All of our surgeons are certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.

Our patients have the utmost confidence in their care, knowing our physicians are fellowship-trained and board-certified. Our physician assistants, nurses and support staff have specialized training and certification to help them meet the needs of orthopaedic patients.

    Recovering From Joint Replacement Surgery

Following your joint replacement surgery, you’ll stay in the hospital for two to three days on average. Healing and recovery times vary. Your orthopaedic care team will talk with you about your discharge needs, including the kind of assistance you’ll need at home and your rehabilitation program.

    A Continued Commitment to Research

Many of our orthopaedic specialists are involved in research in an effort to develop new treatments.  The current focus is on fracture-related studies, such as femoral neck fractures, femur fractures and tibial plateau line fractures.  The goal is to develop orthopaedic and physical therapy routines for the most advanced patient care.

In 2009, our orthopaedic specialists received approximately $250,000 in awards to fund clinical and basic science research.  Currently, there are 25 Institutional Review Board (IRB)-approved prospective and retrospective studies underway in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery.

    Personalized Joint Replacement Care Plans

No matter what type of joint replacement surgery you require, you can depend on our entire orthopaedic care team to help you determine the best care plan for you, from choosing your specialists to developing a rehabilitation plan to help you reach your optimum level of health.
