Compassionate, Confidential Care
Your team of physicians and nurses provides care for your physical symptoms such as anemia and pain. Our specialists understand the pain that can come with sickle cell disease and that pain levels vary based on disease progress. We treat each painful episode on an individual basis.
A social worker dedicated to the Adult Sickle Cell Center will help you manage the emotional aspects of the disease. You’ll also receive assistance in locating and navigating resources.
Working together, your health care specialists provide a comprehensive evaluation and treatment that includes both immediate care and long-term management of chronic symptoms in a compassionate, confidential setting.

Comprehensive Care for Adults With Sickle Cell Disease
Extensive Expertise of Faculty
The highly-trained specialists who provide care at the Adult Sickle Cell Center are faculty members of the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Donald Rucknagel, M.D., Ph.D. and George Atweh, M.D., are at the core of the sickle cell disease care team and have combined treatment experience of over 70 years. Both are regularly published in medical literature on the disease.
Dr. Rucknagel pioneered the use of incentive spirometry to prevent acute chest syndrome, a common complication of sickle cell disease. This therapy is now the standard of care across the country. Dr. Atweh is known for his research in the field of induction of fetal hemoglobin, including the use of hydroxyurea in treatment.
Olugbenga Olowokure, M.D., completed training in hematology/oncology, as well as a special fellowship training in sickle cell disease. Dr. Olowokure has cared for patients with sickle cell disease in Africa, Europe and the United States.
Education is an important part of your care. As part of an academic institution, the Adult Sickle Cell Center provides the education you need to help you manage your disease.
Testing and Support Available
We test individuals for sickle cell traits with results available within 24 to 48 hours.
There are more than 350 individuals diagnosed with sickle cell disease in the Greater Cincinnati area. The Sickle Cell Awareness Group (SCAG) is a community agency that provides access to adult sickle cell support groups, community education and other services.
